In late February 2020, INEI published the Provincial and District Monetary Poverty Map 2018, sparking controversy by indicating that 16 out of the 20 poorest districts in the country are located in the department of Cajamarca. This research focuses on the six most disadvantaged districts in Cajamarca, such as Oxamarca in Celendín, Anguía in Chota, José Sabogal in San Marcos, Cachachi in Cajabamba, Sallique in Jaén, and Cujillo in Cutervo, with the aim of understanding the structural reasons for poverty in the region during 2018. The study seeks to understand the socio-economic characteristics of these districts, analyzing the population distribution by residential areas, educational levels, and economic sectors of employment. Methodologically, it is descriptive and applied, without employing a sample, as it relies on the information available in the Provincial and District Monetary Poverty Map 2018, derived from the National Population and Housing Census 2017 and the National Agricultural Census 2013. The results provide a comprehensive view of the socio-economic conditions of these districts, offering insights to propose alternative solutions to the problem of poverty in Cajamarca.
